Drug Design and Selection within GSK:

Drug Design and Selection (DDS) supports the therapeutic areas within GSK contributing to the discovery of new medicines through the collaborative identification of disease-linked targets and the selection of molecules for future drug development. We are responsible for delivering scientific expertise and specific platform capabilities to ensure that GSK is able to deliver the best modality and molecules, for development, in a particular disease area. Within DDS, there are a number of lines which support this process, working with the therapeutic areas to design and deliver the high quality molecules which are necessary for successful clinical evaluation.

What to expect on the Drug Design and Selection Future Leader Programme:

You will be a full-time, permanent employee with the same competitive benefits as other new starters at GSK. Within the first 3 years of your career at GSK, you will undertake 3 rotations within DDS. These rotations will provide you with the knowledge, technical capability and confidence to be highly successful in the position and beyond. During this time you will have the opportunity to interact with other graduates for training and networking events. You will undertake a number of core training and personal development courses to quickly bring you up to speed with GSK values and expectations.

Discovery Cell Engineering Scientist

This role is UK-based and sits within Protein, Cellular and Structural Sciences - a line within DDS that design, generate and validate biological reagents for early discovery activities across different disease indications using a wide variety of technologies; including molecular biology, modular expression systems, protein biochemistry, and cellular engineering. In addition to providing quality biological reagents to enable lead discovery, we are building capabilities to deliver novel human disease relevant platforms to downstream discovery efforts that ultimately will improve our understanding of the role of the biological target, domain and pathway. This demands cellular platforms with greater flexibility and higher throughput for the delivery of a wide range of complex reagent modalities across multiple therapeutic areas.

A day in the life of a Protein, Cellular and Structure Sciences Future Leader:

  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of transformational technologies with a goal of discovering novel therapeutics.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative complex human cellular model systems; including induced pluripotent stem cell technology and genome editing strategies to support progression of portfolio assets.
  • Seek and interact with external and internal experts/stakeholders to evaluate, implement and industrialise novel 3D models/organoid culture platforms aligned across therapeutic areas.
  • Apply a wide range of downstream methods to enable validation of cellular models to include flow cytometry, next generation sequencing, confocal microscopy, digital droplet PCR, RNA sequencing, single cell biology
  • Contribute and take a role in defining strategy and success in this area.
  • Deliver high quality data to enable early decision making for target/compound progression.

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or an industrially-focused project in the field of Biology.
  • If you have, or expect to obtain in 2018, an MSc (2:1 or better) or PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, or a related subject.
